dan and ivy evigan were married at the young age of sixteen. it was the start of the eighties, the time of expression and change. and the best way dan and ivy knew to express their love was to get married. dan's parents weren't so happy about the union. they refused to attend and cut their son off from the large inheritance he would eventually receive. dan and ivy's friends were the only witnesses as they married on a rooftop in new york city. it would take them years to make the marriage official, but in their eyes, and the eyes of everyone they knew, they were married. and they were happy! which was more than either of them could have said about their own parents. though barely legal and completely broke, the two lived a life they would never claim to regret. they got jobs in the city and lived bohemian style in an apartment with five of their closest friends. the way they were then defined who they'd become years down the road. eventually, ivy got pregnant. it was a long, hard nine month term. they struggled to save enough to move out on their own. a crappy apartment with five people who didn't bathe often enough wasn't going to cut it as a suitable home for a baby. just before ivy went into labor, they closed the deal on a home outside of the city. it wasn't much, more of a shack really, but it was exactly where they wanted to be. so on may 5th, 1989, lucas kenneth evigan was welcomed warmly into the world by two very happy hippies. the first real memory lucas has is of his father's funny smelling garden in the tool shed. it was that very garden that got the family through rougher times. and it was that very smell that lucas would forever relate to his parents. it would remind him of the nights his parents let him stay up late just to make them laugh -- which was a whole lot easier after they had tended to their garden. those nights were his favorite until the day they moved... )
